Gavin's Golden Birthday

Gavin turned 6 on the 6th of April.  We celebrated on the 5th by going up to Woods Cross and spending the day with Gavin's best friend, Brock.  I asked him if he'd like to have a friend party at our house, have a family party with Grandma/pa Anderson or do something fun with Brock.  He chose Brock.  They've been friends since they were 1 1/2 years old.  I'm so sad a big long strip of I-15 separates them now.
We met up at Kangaroo Zoo then had pizza at the park.

That night, we had Grandma/pa Anderson over for dinner (tacos) and cake and ice cream.  Gavin wanted a Cars 3 cake so I baked a pan of brownies, put lots of chocolate icing on top, then topped with Chester Whipplefilter (Lightning McQueen covered in mud) and two other derby cars from the Thunder Hollow Raceway scene in the Cars 3 movie.  Gavin loved it, and it took all but 30 minutes to make!

Matt and I gave Gavin his first ever video game - Minecraft.  This was his ecstatic reaction.  We also gave him a little lego set and a lamp for his bedroom.

Grandma/pa Anderson gave Gavin another Lego set.  We are so glad they live close by and can come to birthdays/holidays, etc.

Then on the 6th, we went to Mt. Pleasant to get our teeth cleaned and then to Gunnison to celebrate Grandma Moo Moo's birthday.  She too was born on April 6th - turning 63 this year.

Spring Break

Now that Gavin is in school, we have "Spring Break."  We didn't do too much except let mom's body heal, and go park hopping.  Each day, we discovered 2 new parks to go to.  The kids loved it, and it was the perfect way to get them out of the house and enjoying the outdoors.

Easter 2018

I so glad I felt good enough the week before Easter to join the kids and Matt in the Saratoga Springs Easter Egg hunt.  It was the right length - 1 1/2 minutes long.  Then we went back home so I could rest.

The next week, Grandma Moo Moo came up and brought a few eggs for a little Easter egg hunt in the basement.

Laynie with her Easter basket and Christmas shirt/skirt.

We found the eggs!

Grandma stayed the night then watched the Saturday morning session of General Conference with us.

As part of a primary assignment, the kids were to draw a picture of something they learned from Conference.  The primary presidency made a slide show and showed it to the kids the next Sunday.

Matt dyed Easter eggs with the kids the night before Easter while I rested.

Easter morn', the kids woke up to their basket of goodies which earned 2 thumbs up from Gavin,

and a cute little smile from Laynie.

The kids each got a water soaker in their basket and before Matt and I even knew it was happening, they had changed into their swim attire to test them out.

It was a cold morning, but that didn't phase them!

We had 16 Andersons at our house for Easter dinner.  We just set up the table and chairs.  Matt's mom brought the ham (and salmon).  It was a nice meal and fun to be with family.

Afterward, Kathy set up a little egg hunt for the grandkids that came.

The Gall of Bitterness

On March 12th, I went in for a 2nd surgery.  The surgeon ended up finding a 2nd tumor on my other ovary and with Matt's permission cut each of my ovaries in half.  He also took something off the surface of my uterus and sprayed some kind of fluid around in my abdomen.  The severed ovaries that were extracted were sent to a pathologist.  It took 2 weeks to get the results back because the labs had to be sent to Harvard for a world expert to examine.  He concluded I have Stage 2 Ovarian Cancer.  This means the cancer has spread throughout my ovaries, possibly into the fallopian tubes, abdominal fluid, etc.  This means I will have to have another surgery to take out all of my ovaries (at the least) and have more biopsies done.  If it's determined the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries, chemotherapy will need to be done.

Here I am at LDS Hospital prior to surgery.

We had to check in at 6am, and I don't do mornings.

Recovery was a BEAST this go-around.  It took a LOT longer than my first surgery.  Every time I would get out of bed and try to walk around, I couldn't breath.  My chest would get tight and my upper back would ache.  I felt nauseated for a good two weeks as well.

Because I couldn't breath, the oncologist had me go to the instacare to be looked over.  When I got there and told them of my symptoms, they told me I needed to go to the emergency room right away for fear of a blood clot in my lungs. They even offered an ambulance.  (How nice, but no thank you.)

Once again, I found myself in the Riverton ER.  I even had the same nurse.
I had an EKG and CT Scan done on me only to determine:  my innards were inflamed.

Poor Matt - patiently waiting at the hospital.

A couple weeks later.  My sweet mother in law knows an herbalist.  The herbalist has a protocol to help cancer patients.  I decided to take the herbs to help my body recover and hopefully avoid chemotherapy.  Well... 10% of the people that take Lomatium (a plant the helps your immune system and flushes out toxins from your body) develop a very severe rash.  Lucky me, I fell into that 10%.  I spent 7 days in the gall of bitterness nursing a swollen, blistered, itchy body.  The rash spread to EVERY part of my skin.  Every. Part.  It was so uncomfortable that I would have nightmares of trying to get stuff off my belly - only to wake up in an itching fit and have to soak in an epsom salt bath in the wee hours of the night.

The rash went through stages - I call this the sunburned stage.

The swollen phase

The purple/blister phase  (Matt told me I looked like an alien during this phase)

The itchiness all over my body phase (this was the longest and most annoying phase).

And this is how one mothers while bound to a bathtub.  Pool Party!

The detoxing rash was at times unbearable, but I really believe it was my body's way of getting unwanted toxins out of my system.  The herbalist explained it as a viral load leaving my body through my lymphatic system and out through the biggest organ of my body - the skin.  Hoping this will not only slow the cancer growth, but aid in my overall health.  What is kind of interesting is that the places on my body that were affected the worst were my ankles and wrists.  In reflexology, a person's ovaries are located around the ankles and wrists.  Coincidence?  Probably not.

Gladys Knight and the Peeps

Since we couldn't have a cat, we thought we'd try our luck with chickens.  On March 10th, we went to the IFA store to just look at the baby chicks and came home with 6 of them - 3 brown leghorn, 3 white leghorn.

They are the cutest things!  We were all smitten.

The kids came up with some very interesting names to name them (like Laynie Jr. and Ice Cream), but we ended up naming the 3 white ones: Big Momma, Wanda, and Little Lottie.

The three brown ones are named Gladys Knight, Eleanor and Brenda.

Matt has to put a door on the coop still, and attach the run he's made.  He's made it from pieces he's been able to get for free - a used dog house, wooden crates, etc.  He's only spent money for the chicken wire and a few hinges.

This is Gavin with Big Mamma at 5 weeks.

Laynie with Gladys Knight and the Peeps - also 5 weeks.
